First edition. Hardcover. Large quarto size. A touch of foxing on the edges, a preliminary page or two, and the verso of the jacket, otherwise fine (the book-plate page not filled in) in fine dustjacket. A superb book, republished a few times in slightly different formats, sizes, in multi-volumes, but without the quality of the first edition. A compendium of fantasy creatures and places, accompanied by colour illustrations (full page, double-spread, half-page, vignette) by Ingpen. The book is divided into sections/chapters, with A-Z entries within each section, so in "Of the Cosmos" we have "Aeolus"; in "Things of the Ground and Underground" we have "Arachne"; in "Things of Wonderland" we have "Atlantis"; in "Of Magic, Science and Invention" we have "Alchemy"; in "Of Water, Sky and Air" we have "Acheron, River"; in "Of The Night" we have "Abiku" (demon of the Yoruba people of West Africa). This heavy book will cost more to send overseas, than any default postage rate noted.
