C'est sur ordre de Philippe le Bon, que Jean Wauquelin, bourgeois de Mons et libraire en cette ville, entreprit la traduction en francais d'une vaste compilation redigee par le valenciennois Jacques de Guise (+ 1399), intitulee Annales historiae principum hannoniae. Cette chronique ecrite a l'origine dans le cercle des comtes de Hainaut de la maison de Baviere magnifiait en trois parties l'histoire du comte, de la chute de Troie a la mort de Jeanne de Constantinople en 1244. Le 12 avril 1433, Jacqueline de Baviere, comtesse de Hainaut, Hollande, Zelande et dame de Frise, renoncait a ces territoires au profit de Philippe le Bon. Celui-ci trouva dans les Chroniques le recit et l'eloge de ses pretentions sur le comte. Les paiements de la mise par ecrit de ces trois prestigieux volumes s'echelonnent de 1448 a 1453. Le duc en surveilla de pres l'avancement. Si des enlumineurs de renom, Guillaume Vrelant et Loyset Liedet, furent charges d'illustrer les volumes II et III, c'est cependant la miniature de presentation du volume I qui, des l'origine, a retenu l'attention. Cette majestueuse composition, attribuee a Rogier de la Pasture -Van der Weyden-, montre le duc, accompagne de son jeune fils -le futur Temeraire- et entoure de ses conseillers et de chevaliers de la Toison d'Or. Il recoit des mains du traducteur agenouille le premier volume des Chroniques . 0 g.
