Eight volumes in four different formats, ranging from crown octavo (one volume) to medium quarto (two volumes), uniformly bound in full dark blue calf, lettered and decorated in gilt, with '500th Anniversary Edition' at the foot of all spines; silk moire endpapers; satin ribbon bookmarks; all edges gilt (top edge gilding a little blemished in most cases); wooden stand (585 × 290 × 230 mm) lightly marked; overall, an attractive presentation set in excellent condition. Number 4603 of 7500 sets (with each volume individually numbered 4603) produced by The Franklin Library to commemorate this impressive anniversary, 1478-1978. The main attraction will always be the two-volume Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary ('Complete Text Reproduced Micrographically') (1981).
