So knapp die Zeilen oft sind und so förmlich das >Liebe Miss Beach bis zum Schluß bleibt - was auf dem Strom dieser über 200 Mit-teilungen herüberkommt, ist ele-mentar: In ihr hatte er eine, auf die konnte er sich verlassen. (In ihrem Buchladen war ständig, quasi als ge-räumiges Postfach, ein Seekoffer von ihm abgestellt.) Und auf seine karge Art in diesen Dingen läßt Joyce auch seine Dankbarkeit spüren. Sylvia Beach war eine der wichtig-sten Figuren in Joyces literarischer Karriere. Sie lancierte ihn, sie unter-stützte und beschützte ihn; sie gab ihm viel mehr, als sie je bekam.
