Wetmore & Co., / Booksellers / and / Stationers. / Yokohama, Japan" giving rise to the speculation that this English bookseller in Japan [Yokohama was not opened to foreign trade until 1859] would stock this title for visiting Western naval personnel, who battled the spread of venereal disease amongst their crew. Modest wear, spine a bit darkened. Bookseller label to front paste-down. Prior owner name stamp to t.p. [George R. Brush, a USN physician, 1861 - 1894]. A VG - VG+ copy of this work, which is uncommon in the trade. Original publisher's terra-cotta cloth binding with gilt stamped lettering to front cover. Brown clay paper eps.

At this time, miners were staking claims on public lands under informal rules and local codes, and the federal government was trying to create a coherent legal system for resource extraction.
