First Edition
1st US Edition (Cordasco 70-1590). 49, [5] pp. Full page advert, at rear, for the "American Journal of Syphilography and Drematology", edited by Henry. 8vo. 9" x 6" From Henry's preface, "To the practitioner the minute details of treatment will be of especial interest and value; whie the numerous formulae (including about two hundred) afford a liberal choice in the management of these afflictions." Of interest in this particular copy is the light green printed bookseller label [1-1/2" x 1-11/16"] for "F. R. Wetmore & Co., / Booksellers / and / Stationers. / Yokohama, Japan" giving rise to the speculation that this English bookseller in Japan [Yokohama was not opened to foreign trade until 1859] would stock this title for visiting Western naval personnel, who battled the spread of venereal disease amongst their crew. Modest wear, spine a bit darkened. Bookseller label to front paste-down. Prior owner name stamp to t.p. [George R. Brush, a USN physician, 1861 - 1894]. A VG - VG+ copy of this work, which is uncommon in the trade. Original publisher's terra-cotta cloth binding with gilt stamped lettering to front cover. Brown clay paper eps.

Nine images of Madeira (including three gelatin silver photos by A.C. Santos and one albumen photo by M.d. O. Perestrello) show Funchal (general views with the harbour, Monte Railway with a steam engine, "Grand Hotel," "Rua Bella Vista"), Camara de Lobos village, Cruzinhas viewpoint, and Ribeirado Cidrao canyon. There is also a lively scene with a traveller posing in a traditional carro do Monte sled, driven by two oxen. Five albumen photos by Francesco Rocchini show Sintra (Pena Palace, Montserrate Palace, general view with the Town Palace) and Jerónimos Monastery in Belem (South Portal, the cloister).
