Condition: New. 2009 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1893). SB. 471 pp + BW Illustrations, maps and plans At a time when the abduction and kidnapping of westerners in Islamic countries is, sadly, an everyday occurrence, this book has an extremely topical interest. It is the memoirs of an Austrian Catholic missionary - Father Jos…eph Ohrwalder - who was abducted by followers of the Mahdi, the Muslim leader who led an Islamic revolt against British rule in the Sudan. Ohrwalderâs ordeal lasted for ten years, but he managed to escape his captors after a decade in their hands, and, after a desperate ride across the desert, got clean away. He wrote an account in German of his often tragic experiences at the suggestion of Colonel Sir Francis Wingate, the officer who debriefed him after his ordeal. Wingate then translated the book into English for its first publication. As well as his own experiences, Ohrwalder gives an inside view of the rise and fall of the Mahdi - and of such events as the siege of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon. A horrific yet thrilling book.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book gives a detailed and fascinating account of the celebrated Captain Thurot, a notorious French privateer who played a significant role in the Seven Years' War. The author, who knew Thurot personally, traces his subject's life from his humble beginnings in France to his daring…exploits as the commander of a fleet of privateer ships. The book offers a rich portrait of Thurot, exploring his motivations, his military strategies, and his personal qualities. It also provides a vivid account of the historical context of his raids on British shipping and his audacious attempt to invade Ireland in 1760. Through its examination of Thurot's life and career, this book sheds light on the nature of maritime warfare in the 18th century and offers insights into the broader geopolitical struggles of the era. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book recounts the 1635 trial of Pedro Ginesta by the Spanish Inquisition. Ginesta, a brazier from France, was accused of eating bacon on St. Bartholomew's Day, which was a fast day. He was imprisoned, interrogated, and eventually sentenced to a public reprimand. The book provides…a fascinating glimpse into the workings of the Spanish Inquisition, which was a powerful and feared institution during the 16th and 17th centuries. The trial of Ginesta highlights the Inquisition's zeal in enforcing religious orthodoxy, and the severe punishments that could be meted out to those who violated its rules. The book offers a unique perspective on the history of religious persecution and the struggle for freedom of conscience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Overall a wonderful copy of this pi…ece of American culture and history. Slight wear at edges from being moved around the bookshop. Excellent resource, informative and enjoyable reading. About Author: John Filson (c. 1747-1788) was born in Pennsylvania about 1747 and sent as a teenager to Maryland for a classical education. During and after the Revolution he tried his hand at farming, teaching, and land surveying. In 1783 the infant U.S. government began to reward veterans of the Revolution with free land. Qualified individuals were given receipts, called warrants, that could be exchanged for acreage in the West. Most veterans never intended to go west, however, and they sold these land warrants to real estate speculators. In this way Filson soon acquired the right to 13,500 acres in Kentucky. He settled in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1784, where he returned to teaching and surveying, and met Daniel Boone and other early white settlers. In 1784, hoping to induce more eastern pioneers to come to the region (and buy his land), Filson wrote the book given here. -- Because at the time there were no printers in Kentucky, he traveled back to Maryland to have it set in type. It was published later that year with a ghost-written autobiography of Daniel Boone. The book successfully extolled the virtues of the west, the appendix established Boone in the popular mind as the quintessential frontiersman, and the map led thousands of settlers through Cumberland Gap into the trans-Appalachian region over the next two decades. While traveling in southern Illinois in 1786 he was attacked by its Indian owners and barely escaped with his life. On a surveying trip further into Ohio later that year his party was attacked again by the Shawnee. Filson fled into the woods and was never heard from again. ~ We appreciate your consideration of one of our books, art prints or novelty items. Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. [Bruno Keilitz and Oscar Hirsch] 12 fine pen and ink images by the prolific anatomical/medical illustrator Bruno Keilitz (b. 1898) showing the stages of the removal of a pituitary tumor. The illustrations seem to have been for an article written by Dr. Prof. Oscar Hirsch (1877-1965), who was an…early and influential Viennese rhinologist who made major contributions to pituitary surgery, performing this transspheroidal procedure for Harvey Cushing in 1911, and who would go on to perform the procedure more than 500 times in his long career.(Note Of the 12 drawings, 9 are very closely related and show the progress and route of a transsphenoidal surgery for the removal of a pituitary tumor. I feel pretty confident that these drawings were done in 1930 (see below). These images are labeled I-VIII (including a "Ia"). These images measure about 6x8.5 inches each, drawn on a heavy stock, and done in colors. Each of these images is drawn from the same perspective and show different aspects of the surgery in progression. These drawings I-VIII are all rubbers tamped on the back with Bruno Kelitz's name and address; two of this series are signed by Kelitz in the drawing, both of which are dated 1930. There are also some other notations in ink on the reverse that I can't quite place, as well as some later dates, as the images seem to have been used on more than one occasion. One drawing in this series has an old American Medical Association label (seemingly stamped Feb 11, 1952), identifying the publication of origin ("Arch. Otol" Archives of Otolyrngology), the author ("Hirsch"), and the type of reproduction to be used when illustrating the article. The last of this series is signed and dated (1930) by Kleitiz. The 10th drawing is similar to the preceding nine, though is smaller and is without color, and shows the interior radium application of the tumor. Measurement: 4.5 x 6 inches. The 11th drawing shows six different types of tumors, I think, and is rendered in black and white. Measurement: 4.5 x 6 inches. 10 of the images have their original wax paper protective covering; one has a plastic cover and the last has no cover at all. All are in fine condition. The 9-drawing series are all quite bright and fine. Notes: 1. Transsphenoidal Surgery: Complication Avoidance and Management Techniques, edited by Edward R. Laws, Jr, Aaron A. Hirsch's dedication to the transsphenoidal technique as the most effective method to approach the sella ran contrary to his contemporary's opinion. Cushing, with large series' of cases using both transcranial and.transsphenoidal approaches to the sella, would ultimately choose the former as the more efficacious procedure. Citing its distinct advantage in providing a direct and gross exposure of the gland, Cushing helped establishwidespread employment of the transcranial method throughout Europe by the 1930s.".
