In zijn deels autobiografische roman Vuurland vertelt Andreas Oosthoek over zijn tijd als dienstplichtig militair bij het omstreden detachement Dienst Identificatie, een 'samenraapsel van dromers en denkers, gestrande studenten en rotjongens'. Ze zijn overgeleverd aan de naweeen van de oorlog, ze zi…jn overgeleverd aan elkaar. Dagelijks worden ze geconfronteerd met de dood, de gesneuvelde jongens zijn van hun eigen leeftijd en hebben de tekenen van vergelding, moord en verraad. Het is de taak van Eenheid 402 om de naamlozen een naam te geven en thuis te brengen. De Duitse grens over, met trompetgeschal en wapperende vlaggen.Vuurland vertelt over de drieentwintigjarige commandant Alva, een bikkel met een zachte kern. Zijn 'lijkenpikkers' hebben een mascotte, Krakau de Kraai, en kennen bizarre rituelen. Ze delen liefde en noodlot en soms raken ze aan de grens van de waanzin, zonder begeleiding, zorg of nazorg. Ze zijn, zoals Alva zegt, 'de spelers in een antioorlogsfilm'.Vuurland is ook het verhaal van de Duitse grenadier die omkomt bij de haast vergeten Slag om de Schelde, de van brute moord beschuldigde Britse commando's en de jongen uit Keulen die - jaren na de oorlog - het spoor zoekt van zijn vader, een gevreesde commandant die in de duinen van Walcheren door zijn eigen mannen is afgeknald.

De jonge Solle groeit op in de Zeeuwse polder van de jaren vijftig, waar hij later het familiebedrijf zal overnemen. Als boerenzoon op het gymnasium is hij een buitenbeentje, maar dan ontmoet hij de excentrieke Jacques - een buutendieker, net als hij. De jongens worden onafscheidelijk. Terwijl Solle zich sterk verbonden voelt met zijn geschiedenis en familie, wil de jonge baron Jacques Christophe d'Ulm de wijde wereld in. Hij verlangt naar een nomadisch bestaan en vrijheid, maar ondanks hun zielsverwantschap vertrekt Jacques naar Frankrijk. Hun contact blijft intens, ook op afstand, en ze blijven dromen van een toekomst samen. Maar als Jacques getroffen wordt door een onbekende ziekte, verdwijnt alle hoop op een lang leven. Plotseling is hun tijd samen beperkt, en blijft Solle met niets dan herinneringen achter. Het relaas van Solle is een aangrijpende geschiedenis over het overwinnen van een groot verlies. Andreas Oosthoek roept intense beelden op in een tijdloos romandebuut, een literaire herontdekking voor de lezers van Jeroen Brouwers en Oek de Jong.
