En 1965 ganó el premio de cuentos "Casa de las Américas" con el libro Cualquiercosario. Ha publicado infinidad de cuentos en publicaciones tan dispares como "Nueva exp…resión" de Buenos Aires y "New Left" de Londres. Contramutis quedó finalista en el premio Biblioteca Breve de 1968 y fue uno de los manuscritos más discutidos en las reuniones del jurado. La causa es que Onetti no tiene reparo en echar mano de cualquier técnica con tal de que sirva para añadir fuerza a su re-lato.
