Many recent critics of Freud have demanded a "true" reading; these authors argue for a synthesis, albeit one that is characterized by internal contradictions and tensions. The original contributions of this book come through in a variety of ways, not the least of which is the care with which these authors have researched every aspect of Freud's work. They have highlighted a much-neglected concept of Freud's-that of deferred action-an early idea that figures prominently in the famous Fliess letters and that helps us to clarify the theoretical shift from the seduction hypothesis to the fantasy theory. Also original is their treatment of the oedipal complex, which these authors believe derives from several sources, including the biological and the social. What makes this book truly unique, however, is its breadth and its comprehensiveness. It presents under one roof the various "readings" of Freud that have appeared over the years-from the natural sciences to the humanistic-hermeneutic tradition. (Verlagstext) // INHALT : .
