Seller: BOP Books, Tauranga, New Zealand
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Art, Map (illustrator). 1st. This history of the East Coast area of the North Island, with Gisborne city as its principle centre, tells the story of one of the geographically most isolated areas of the NI. It traces the arrival and settlement of the Maori people, of Cook's landing, with the welcome he received leading to him naming his ladfall Poverty Bay, still so called today. The authors then follow the history of Maori-European relationships (sometimes hostile, often uncertain,) the expansion of European settlement, agriculture and the slow pace of development, particularly communications, owing to its isolation. Today, the East Coast, despite its undoubeted potantial, remains relatively under-developed, the "Challenge" still not entirely fulfilled. An interesting history of a fascinating part of NZ. 251 pages including glossary, index, 24 b/w illustrations (photos/art), frontis map. red hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ with red titles VG with light edgewear, few short tears, chips, small hole low on back flap fold.
