"In 1927, Olivecrona published in the comprehensive monograph Die chirurgische Behandling der Gehirntumoren his results and experiences of the brain tumor procedures he had performed since his debut as a brain surgeon [in 1922] and thus quickly became internationally known. In this future classic, Olivecrona not only reported his surgical results but also sought to analyze his operative failures and gave remarks and instructions on how such could be counteracted and prevented in the future" (English translation of article on Herbert Olivecrona by Bengt Ljunggren in online Swedish biographical dictionary).

BY HERBERT OLIVECRONA TO GEOFFREY JEFFERSON: "To Geoffrey Jefferson/ with kind regards/ from H. Olivecrona." "In the summer of 1935, [Olivecrona] was visited by the British neurosurgeon pioneer Geoffrey Jefferson, who then wrote: 'Olivecrona is first-rate; he works calmly and methodically and yet gets his bone flaps up in 12-15 minutes. He uses the Martel drill and a bone saw designed by Max Stille--a very great improvement over the old Gigli saw. Olivecrona operates on at least two cases a day, five days a week' " (English translation of article on Herbert Olivecrona by Bengt Ljunggren in online Swedish biographical dictionary). 76 pp; 4 figs.; 5 curves; 22 tables. Original wrappers. "8281" stamped on front wrapper. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY HERBERT OLIVECRONA: "Professor W. G. MacCallum/ with the sincere regards of H. Olivecrona." This publication was Olivecrona's Dissertation in the Division of Surgery at the Karolinska Institutet. He began his research on peritonitis during a year he spent at Johns Hopkins where William G. MacCallum was chairman of the Department of Pathology. "During the end of the First World War, Herbert Olivecrona served at clinics in Dortmund and in Leipzig, where he learned from Prof E. Payr surgical treatment of gunshot and shrapnel injuries. As an assistant surgeon at the Serafimer Hospital, he received a scholarship from the Sweden-America Foundation. His original idea was to 'study experimental surgery at the Rockefeller Institute in New York with tissue culture pioneer Alexis Carrel' and perform some scientific work in this field. Upon Olivecrona's arrival in the United States, however, Carrel was away, and Olivecrona decided instead to work for Prof. W Halsted at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. At the laboratory attached to the university hospital for experimental surgery, Olivecrona sought through animal experimental studies to find the cause of intestinal paralysis in connection with intestinal obstruction and peritonitis. After returning to Sweden, Olivecrona completed these studies at Karolinska Institutet. In his travel report to the foundation, Olivecrona stated that in addition to the experimental work he followed the teaching of surgery and related subjects, that he had always been 'present at Dr. Halsted's lectures and clinical rounds' and also attended surgeries in urology, orthopedics, surgery and neurosurgery. The neurosurgical activities at the hospital were led by W. Dandy. In 1922, Olivecrona defended his dissertation on an experimental work entitled An experimental study of the circulatory failure in peritonitis [offered here]. Both the author of the dissertation and the defense received the grade 'approved with excellent praise'. So Olivecrona applied for an associate professor in experimental surgery. In the statement from Karolinska Institutet, it is stated that Olivecrona 'has a solid education in the theoretical basis of medicine . . . He has further through experimental studies and work both in America and at the current physiological department proved to have good theoretical and practical conditions for continued activity in it' (Karolinska Institutet's archive). In 1922, Olivecrona operated on his first patient with a brain tumor" (English translation of article on Herbert Olivecrona by Bengt Ljunggren in online Swedish biographical dictionary).
