Add to basketWoodblock print, 38.2 x 26.7cm; 41.3 x 29.2cm (sheet), carver's chop (Kikuta) and printer's chop (Nagae) in left margin with the publisher's chop, artist's signature (in English and Japanese) and red seal within the image lower right, faint toning along the margins, but in very good condition. Ohno Bakufu (1888 - 1976) was born in Tokyo but spent much of his career in the Kansai region after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. A prominent artist of the Shin-hanga movement, Ohno is most famous for his series "Familiar Fishes of Nippon" (published 1937-1944 from Nishinomiya Shoin, later Kyoto Hanga-in post-WW2). His botanical works are valued for their vivid colours and blend of traditional Japanese style with Western realism. Here he has rendered an autumn floral arrangement in a woven basket with chrysanthemum and gentian flowers with coloured maple leaves.…

This print shows three large bamboo-shoots and four large culms with just a few leaves at just above ground-level. Bamboo shoots were commonly collected in the winter months and used as a food-delicacy. . Long and intense boiling is needed to render them edible. Bakufu was a Kyoto Shin-Hanga woodblock print maker and painter who did poignant and tender subjects during the pre & post-World II era. . *** The subject of bamboo is seldom found in Japanese prints. This superb work shows bamboo at its best and in a delicate combination of colors with superb composition.
