Henry Loomis Nelson was an American author, editor, and teacher. Henry Loomis Nelson was born on January 5, 1846 in New York City, New York, United States. Nelson was graduated from Williams College in the class of 1867. From Williams College he went to the law school of Columbia University, received the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1869. Business called Nelson to Kalamazoo, Michigan; during his residence in that city his interest in public questions prompted him to send letters to the newspapers, and resulted in shifting his attention from law to journalism. In 1876 he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he became owner and editor of the Franklin County Times. He became the Washington correspondent of the Boston Post from 1878 to 1885. In 1885 he was called from Washington to become editor of the The Boston Post. A year later a change in the ownership of the Post set him adrift. He returned to New York and for eight years he engaged in editorial work, first for the Star, then for the Mail and Express, then for the World. From 1894 to 1898, during the turbulent final years of the Cleveland administration, the free-silver campaign of 1896, and the tumult of the Spanish-American War, he was editor of Harper's Weekly. The succeeding years he gave to free-lance writing, until in 1902 Williams College called him to the newly created David A. Wells Professorship of Political Science. With 44 full page chromolithographed illustrations of the uniforms of the United States Army from 1775 to 1888, accompanied by Nelson's text in letterpress. ALL ILLUSTRATIONS PRESENT. The lithographs are after water colors by H. A. Ogden. Prepared and executed by the Quartermaster General of the United States under authority of the Secretary of War. Lithographed by G. H. Buek & Co. Illustrated book, with accompanying text, of American Army officers and soldiers from the American Revolution to the turn of the 20th century in complete regalia. The men are shown in naturalistic settings with weapons, horses, and other paraphernalia. Each plate is rendered with attention to historical accuracy and meticulous detail, some including famous military figures such as Lafayette and General Ulysses S. Grant. This book has been called "the outstanding American Work on the subject" and Ogden "the ultimate artist authority on this subject." Its value as a reference is attested to by its later reissues in 1959 and most recently in 1998 by Dover Books; but it must be noted that the rendering of the illustrations is markedly inferior to that in the original publication. U.S. Army uniforms from 1774 to 1888. Volume II is a portfolio containing 44 large (approximately 15" x 17") full-color facsimile plates from water color drawings. Titles of the first 25 plates: "Independent Company Organizations, 1774-1775"; "Miscellaneous Organizations, Continental Army, 1776-1779"; "Commander-in-Chief, Aide-de-Camp, Line Officers, etc., 1779-1783"; "Infantry: Continental Army, 1779-1783"; "Artillery, 1777-1783"; "Light Infantry, 1782"; "Infantry and Artillery, 1783-1796"; "Infantry and Musicians, 1796-1799"; "Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery, 1799-1802"; "Commander-in-Chief and Staff, 1799-1802"; "Infantry and Artillery, 1802-1810"; "General, Staff, and Infantry, 1810-1813"; "Artillery, Infantry, Rifle, Dragoon, Cadet, 1813-1821"; "General, Staff and Line Officers, Light Artillery, 1813-1821"; "Regimental Officers, Engineer, and Cadet, 1821-1832"; "Major-General, Staff and Line Officers, Cadets, 1832-1835"; "Enlisted Men: Artillery, Infantry, Dragoons (Full Dress), 1835-1850"; "Major-General, Staff and Line Officers (Undress), 1841-1850"; "Voltigeur, Infantry, Dragoon, Artillery (Campaign Uniform), 1841-1851"; "Major-General, Staff and Line Officers, 1851-1858"; "Engineers, Foot Rifles, Dragoons (Musician), Light Artillery, Infantry, 1851-1854"; "Artillery, Ordnance, and Engineers, 1851-1858"; "Cavalry and Dragoons, 1855-1858"; "General-in-Chief, Engineers, Artillery, Cadets, 1858-1861"; "Artillery, Infantry, Mounted Rifles, Light Artillery, 1858-1861." Uniform of the Army of the United States, 1898 to 1907. Henry (Harry) Alexander Ogden aka H. A. Ogden) was an American illustrator particularly of historical and military subjects. After 8 years working for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, in 1881 he resigned to set up as a free-lance artist, submitting numerous illustrations to various newspapers and magazines. A number of these were illustrations of historical scenes, and Ogden's interest in early America and the Revolutionary War led him to his most ambitious project, to record the uniforms of the United States Army. Between 1890 and 1907, various sections of Uniforms of the United States Army were published. The Quartermaster General of the army had been so impressed with Ogden's work that he commissioned the artist to prepare designs depicting the uniforms of the army since its inception in the 18th century. The first dozen watercolors were completed by the mid-1880s; these were used in the Regulations for the Uniform of the Army of the United States published in May 1888. The artist began work on seventy paintings representing uniforms worn between 1774 and 1888. In 1890, the first forty-seven plates were published, and subsequent plates covered the period from 1898 up to 1907. …
