Softcover Satin Finish. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. ## Lighting: Early Oil Lamps, Candles by W T O'Dea 1966 No.1 ## ## THIS BOOK: Classified FINE: This Book is the 1966 edition. Originally published in 1966. A unique catalogue of early oil lamps is held at The Science Museum. Full colour photos of the various oil lamps in colour and information on each one,## ## Wherever possible, the following photographs have been planned not so much with technical detail in mind as to convey the lighting atmosphere that could be derived from these old-time devices. The fuels used have been identical to or practically equivalent to those used then. Mutton fat was used as grease in the grease lamps, but a present-day veterinary grade of cod liver oil was deemed reasonable enough for crude fish oil. Tallows varied in smell-producing and light-giving quality when they were in common use. They could be very poor. ## # The British Admiralty always specified that candles should be of 'best London tallow', but as the cost was not very much less than that of the much more manageable beeswax, Samuel Pepys, who was Secretary of the Admiralty Board, in 1663 'begun to burn wax candles in my closet at the office, to try the charge, and to see whether the smoke offends like that of tallow candles.'## ## Tallow did not have to be of animal origin. To a lesser extent, mutton fat, pig fat, and arid beef fat were common in Britain, but in many countries, a tallow of vegetable origin was more easily procured. For lamps, before large supplies of mineral oils came in from 1860 ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. Please get in touch with me for a shipping quotation. ###.
