Nyce, Helene (illustrator) (illustrator). dj has heavy edge wear, rubbing, creasing and chipping, numerous short tears and small pieces missing, pencil writing on inside front dj flap, binding tight, pages have heavy edge soil and minor yellowing but no brittleness, 402 pages, story of a motherless child and an absent child living with her grandfather and tormented by her slightly older aunts and uncles who turns to her black nurse for protection and must figure out how to win the love of her unloving father when he finally returns, bw frontispiece by Helene Nyce Size: 5.5 x 8.25.

Cover is worn, particularly along edges. Some of corners have been torn off. Page corners slightly bumped. Most pages are free of marks, though front cover and one other page are marked with the letter F. Back cover has some pencil scribbles. Overall well-loved, with vintage appeal. Children's book features full-page color illustrations, all of which are signed by the artist.

Hardcover octavo (7" x 9.25") has colorful paper (with the Peat illustration front & back) over blue cloth-covered boards, lettered in black to spine/blue to front. Condition is VG+: extremely clean , binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages lightly tanned, completely unmarked save for gift inscription dated 1942 to copyright page. Exterior shows modest rubbing to extremities, slight bumping to corners & both ends of spine. The unclipped DJ is Good+: colorful & bright, with mild-moderate rubbing to extremities & a few chips, including at both ends of spine; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover Free (removed for photos).
