Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A larger octavo in half black leather over pebbled dark green boards of a title fairly common in reprints but not in the 1849 first printing, as here. Considerable scattered foxing, though none serious enough to impair readability. Previous owner's name "75 Alex I. Dupont"… in pencil to top of title page. (There are an Alex I. Dupont school district and a pair of Alex I. Dupont schools in Delaware.) Faded but still legible inscription to otherwise blank FFE (we have artificially darkened our scan of this page to enhance legibility) reads: "du Pont / Dec. 3d 1855 / Monday Evening. / Hagley - Near Wilmington / Christiana Hd. / On the Brandywine" ("Delaware" is crossed out, here, and replaced with "Brandywine." The Brandywine and Christina creeks join at Wilmington to flow into the Delaware. The Dupont family fortune grew largely from the black powder works operated 1803-1921 at Hagley along the Brandywine, the property now preserved as a museum. And yes, Dec. 3 was a Monday.) The 46 plates including the hand-colored frontisipiece of the Sioux warrior Wahk-Ta-Ge-Li have been counted and enumerated on a laid-in card. Includes "The Lost Sister of Wyoming," many others. 448 pp., here reduced from $330. As with all our items priced $90 or higher, this book will be shipped "signature required.". Illustrated with Numerous Engravings, from Designs by W. Croome and Other Distinguished Artists (illustrator).

REF: Nevill, 23 "A Principle Sporting Book"; Higginson: 52; Smith: 400; ODNB; DWB; Biscotti: 22. Charles James Apperley, writing under the pseudonym Nimrod, is a vivid and sprawling portrait of fox-hunting in early 19th-century England. The book follows Apperley's tours through counties like Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Warwickshire, and others, as he attends hunts, meets sporting characters, and writes letters and reflections on the chase. It weaves together lively anecdotes, tales of celebrated riders (crack riders), discussions of etiquette, descriptions of the countryside, and technical observations about riding to hounds. The style is ornate by modern standards, with a fondness for detail, flourish, and humor; you get sense not only of the sport itself, but of the social rituals around it: the riders, the huntsmen, the landowners, the country inns, and landscapes traversed. Subjects: Fox-hunting culture; Sporting men & riders; Rural English landscape; 19th-century social etiquette; Letters & riding to hounds; Local character and topography; Tradition & leisure; Field sports and hunting lore, Sporting memoir / travel; British social history; Historical non-fiction. Illustrations by Numerous Contemporary Artists (illustrator).
