Publisher's Red cloth boards with gilt blocked titles to spine, 230 x 150 mm approx. 3 vol set with all portraits, maps, illustrations, facsimile letter and title pages all as called for + fold out pedigree. Blind impressed circular "Presentation copy" to all title pages. The original owner being Adolphus William Ward one time Master of Peterhouse Cambridge with his book plate to all three front paste downs and subesquent - same family - daughter and son in law - Cynthia and John Barnes - later Sir John Barnes - son of the mathematician and cleric Bishop Barnes - book plates to front free end papers. Good - spines a little sunned with handling and general shelf soiling, no significant wear, book plates as above, very occasional pencil marks to margins and pencil notes to rear paste down to two vols from a reading, mild foxing to edges of book blocks, offset browning and mild foxing to last few leaves. Top edges dust soiled and tissue guards to plates tanned. Bindings sound with no other notable faults).
