The later reuse of the notebook for recording death and marriage notices further situates the object within domestic record-keeping practices, demonstrating how educational materials were incorporated into family and social memory. Healy, Laura E. Mathematical notebook. 1876-1884. Manuscript volume inscribed "Laura E. Healy, Room No. 2, Point Street Grammar School, September 6th 1876," containing 214 pages of handwritten arithmetic problems and solutions. The problems range from abstract calculations to applied scenarios involving commerce, agriculture, and household management, including exercises such as determining orchard composition ("¾ apple trees, 1/10 peach trees.how many trees in the orchard"), calculating material requirements for interior spaces ("How many rolls of paper.to cover 4 sides of a room"), pricing strategies ("Bought a shawl for $18.make a dis. of 10% and yet sell for $18"), and interest computations across specific dates. These examples demonstrate an educational framework grounded in real-world application, preparing students for participation in domestic and economic life. The first approximately 30 pages were later repurposed between 1879 and 1884 to paste in and label newspaper clippings of death and marriage notices, with a handwritten cover title "Deaths and Marriages," indicating a shift from formal schooling to personal and familial record preservation. A loose handwritten exchange between children, including the verse "You be the gal which I adore.more than buckwheat cakes & 'lasses," followed by the response "That is foolish and you know it. Pass this back," provides additional evidence of informal social interaction within the school environment.
