Eleventh (11th) Printing (see printing information at the bottom of page 386) of the First (1st) Edition, the first printing of which was in 1941. NOTE: The publisher's name in 1941 was Harper and Brothers; it was changed to Harper & Row in 1962. Near Fine in a Near Fine mylar protected Dust Jacket. Ex-Library with the following library markings: (1) glue residue at the base of the dust jacket spine; (2) glue residue from tape on the top and bottom of the front and back boards of the book; (3) library stamp and discard stamp on the top-edge of the text block; (4) library stamp and discard stamp on the title page. NOTE: The front free endpaper is a cancel. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with deckled fore-edges and no markings other than those described above. The Binding is full dark blue cloth, color faded at the top and bottom 1/16" and at front board and spine where light came through the dust jacket, with publisher's logo in bright gilt to the front board, bright gilt title, etc., to the spine, unmarked endpapers, corners square and sharp, and no markings other than those described above. The Dust Jacket would be fully intact except that the front flap is price clipped, and is bright, colors uniform throughout, with the exception of the glue residue at the base of the spine. See the photos. 386 pages. 5 3/4" x 8 3/8". This posthumously published book consists of a novella bearing the title name of the book, a series of short stories that had never appeared in book form previously, and a 37 page "Note on Thomas Wolfe" by Edward C. Aswell, dated August, 1941, at the end of the book.

Slight shelf wear, mild toning to rear endpapers from a news clipping (removed) having been laid in. vi,386 pp. Color illus. dust jacket is rubbed along edges with several 1" or less closed tears and associated creasing, with shallow chipping/loss to both spine extremities. Internally, pp. 186-87, 190-91, 194-95, and 198 (blank) show, interestingly, not an offset but rather a reverse ghost of the text on the leaf's flipside (either recto or verso). We do not know whether this condition is unique to this copy or part of a larger print run; the primary text is still legible, though not without some difficulty on those cited pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
Condition: Good. Hbk, 386pp, stated 1st edition (10-1 / D-G), very good dark navy cloth with green labels and gilt titles, lightly rubbed at extremities, now in custom acetate jacket, gift inscr on front endpaper, otherwise a very good clean unmarked text.
