Illustrated with a few title page facsimiles and two fold-outs including the proof of the preface to the first edition of THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, corrected in Gibbon's hand. At the end of the book are three appendices, a list of attacks on Gibbon, table of authors, and an index. Bound in the original red cloth, stamped in shiny gold. From the introduction: "The bibliography is, in the main, confined to editions published before 1838. Full collations are given of all editions published before 1800 and of a few important editions after that date. Otherwise only a condensed description is given of the later editions.
