Each volume and the entire set are Very Good. This is a two-volume set containing the printed text of letters by James Russell Lowell (1819-1891), an American poet, literary critic, editor, and diplomat. Lowell was part of the Romantic movement in literature and was associated with the Fireside Poets. Editor Charles Eliot Norton writes in an Editorial Note that his intent was to select and arrange Lowell's letters to form a sort of autobiography. Also included are third-person biographical descriptions that add further details to Lowell's life. Volumes I and II collectively encompass the entirety of Lowell's life; Vol. I covers the years 1819-1868 and Vol. II covers the years 1868-1891. Referenced in the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) as No. 13227 which speculates that this edition precedes the American Edition.

Cloth. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. First Edition. 2 volumes, complete. Gilt page tops. Uncut page sides and bottoms. Frontispiece each volume. Scattered light foxing. 418 and 464 pages. From the Editorial Note in Volume I: "In making the following selection from the great mass of Mr. Lowell's letters which was in my hands, my attempt was to secure for it, so far as possible, an autobiographic character". "Mr. Lowell, indeed, made to the public in his poetry such revelation of his inward experiences and emotions as he alone had the right to make, and such as may well suffice to satisfy all legitimate interest in the spiritual development of the poet and in the nature of his most intimate and sacred human relations. Read together, his poems and his letters show him with rare completeness as he truly was".

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This biography follows the life of historian William Hickling Prescott, whose penmanship contributed to the historical understanding of Spain and Spanish colonial possessions in the Americas. Born into an affluent and nurturing home in 1796, Prescott was a lively yet well - disciplined lad who struggled with his studies and the weight of familial expectations. He entered Harvard College and graduated without distinction but began a career as a writer under the surface. His conflicted feelings about his career path pushed him through moments of self -doubt and reassessment. Guided by strong will and surrounded by a supportive family and friends, Prescott eventually dedicated himself to historical writing. This biography explores Prescottâs personal conflicts, using extensive quotes from his journals and letters, as he navigated a literary landscape to become an esteemed historian. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
