Its first editor was Norman Macleod. After his death in 1872, it was edited by his brother, Donald Macleod, though there is some evidence that the publishing was ta…ken over at that time by W. Isbister & Co. This copy of the full year's run for 1872 is very Good in three-quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt spine titles. There is moderate foxing on the endpapers and three small stains to the foredge. NOT ex-library. The text is quite clean and unmarked. The year's issues serialized the first appearance in print of Trollope's "The Golden Lion of Granpere". Originally turned down by Trollope's publisher William Blackwood. Blackwood later relented and published it in book form later that same year. . BI20. Various (illustrator).

Staple bound in publisher's printed wraps. Very Good with light soiling and wear to wraps, "R. B." written in pencil on the top edge of front cover alongside a small chip, faint ve…rtical crease fold throughout. Uncommon.W.E.B. Du Bois founded The Crisis in 1910. The stated purpose of the landmark publication was to "set forth those facts and arguments which show the danger of race prejudice, particularly as manifested today toward colored people." Roy Wilkins notably took over as editor in 1934 until 1949, transforming the periodical into a major platform for Civil Rights. Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, the first African American student-athlete at Syracuse University, graces the front cover. This issue includes articles by Edna Quinn, Edward E. Redcay and Edna Burke writing on getting jobs in Oklahoma.
