Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl jazz album, MGV-8001, Near-mint vinyl (silver print on black labels) in a near-mint cardboard jacket. This is a compilation of tracks from earlier Verve albums, including the cuts "April in Paris," "What Is This Thing Called Love," etc. Norman Granz's somewhat grudging album notes reveal that he found working with Bird "a trying experience." (Granz wanted to -- and did -- pair Parker with Afro-Cuban groups like Machito and Chico O'Farrill. Granz wanted to -- and did -- record Bird "playing pretty tunes . . . with strings." It's a wonder Granz didn't put Charlie Parker in the studio with Bobby "Boris" Pickett or Alvin and the Chipmunks.) Granz does -- grudgingly -- praise Parker's work on "Lady Be Good" and on the "Bird and Diz" album -- none of which material actually appears on this disc. Gee, thanks, Norman! Reduced from $32.

Spiral-Bound HARDCOVER-- black cloth boards w/ intact gilt-- in NEAR FINE Condition in VERY GOOD Yellow & Black Dustjacket showing minor wear/ soil. INTERIOR PRISTINE: clean, tight, bright. INCLUDES 2 Compact Discs of the music, unplayed. Approx 6 1/4 by 5 1/4," np. By the late 1940s Norman Granz had already achieved fame with his Jazz at the Philharmonic records. But he was aware there was more to jazz than concert jam sessions, so he began an ambitious series of studio sessions-- aiming to feature artists who would not be at home in his concerts or who were looking to play in different contexts. The result was "The Jazz Scene," originally issued in a limited, signed, 5,000 album edition of 12-inch 78 rpm discs which is now a collector's item. Although some of the individual tracks have appeared numerous times since their original release-- and three, Charlie Parker's "The Bird", Coleman Hawkin's "Picasso", and Machito's "Tango", have become famous in their own right-- half the twelve items that comprise the original have not been reissued in the US since the Fifties. Verve Records has faithfully recreated page-by-page the original Jazz Scene folio package design, including all of Gjon Mill's famous photographs, Granz's text, and the cloth-covered binder. The program of music has been expanded by including rare and, in some cases, unissued material, often from the same sessions, making this two and a half hour set a cornucopia of Granz's early studio-based output. Other artists included: Duke Ellington, Henry Carney, Billy Strayhorn, Neal Hefti, Lester Young, Nat "King" Cole, Buddy Rich, Ralph Burns, George Handy, Willie Smith, Bud Powell, Lester Young & Flip Phillips. Carefully shipped.
