Covers show moderate soiling from handling and age, tips of covers a little crushed and scuffed. Binding cracked in a couple places in the middle with webbing visible but intact, no loose pages.

However, the vast majority of tales are more didactic and educational, offering samples of a wide range of historical material. English history is touched upon with tales about King Alfred, William of Normandy, King John, Robert the Bruce, Henry the Eighth, Geoffrey Chaucer, Edmund Spenser, et alia. America is represented by essays on Eskimo children, St. Augustine, Fl., and Ulysses S. Grant. Even the classics are touched upon with accounts of Zeus, the fall of Troy, Phaeton, Romulus, Themistocles, et alia. A most interestin g collection.
