Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "The sad fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton", "Mr Gilfil's love-story" and "Janet's repentance", are the three stories which make up this, George Eliot's first work of fiction, published anonymously in "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine" in 1857. In these stories George Eliot aimed to present, as truthfully as possible, the lives of ordinary men and women, their joys and suffering, their emotions, their conceptions of life and their human weaknesses, in such a way that they might capture the reader's sympathy and compassion. This edition reproduces the text of the same editor's Clarendon edition, based on the first volume printing collated with later editions and with the manuscript. Thomas Noble is author of "George Eliot's scenes of clerical life" and the chronology is by Gordon S. Haight. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Add to basketHardback. Condition: New. George Eliot's first work of fiction, Scenes of Clerical Life, appeared serially in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in 1857. It was immediately recognized as, in the words of the Saturday Review, "the production of a peculiar and remarkable writer whose style showed little or no family resemblances with that of any living author." Using the first edition of 1858 as copy text, this edition records all substantive variants in the manuscript and subsequent editions of the book over which the author had control. The editor's introduction gives a detailed history of the writing and publication of the work, as well as a description of the manuscript and lists of emandations and variant spellings.
