Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The rapid development of lasers in the past few decades has led to their application in almost every field of science and technology. The idea that it should be possible to convert the energy released in chemical reactions of chemical lasers directly into coherent radiation resulted in the advent in the 1960s. These first chemical lasers, however, consumed much more energy to initiate the reaction than they emitted. The search for more ef ficient chemical lasing led to the utilization of chain reactions. However, care had to be taken to maintain the appropriate pressure. In 1970, it was demonstrated that the operation of chemical lasers at atmospheric pressure was also feasible, making it easier and cheaper to construct them. One of the advantages of chemical lasers is the wide range of radia tion wavelengths emitted by them: 1.3 - 26 ~m. The vibrational frequen cies of many molecules fall within this range so that they may convenient ly be used for the operation of such lasers. Progress in the development of chemical lasers is intimately con nected with advances in related fields such as gas dynamics, chemical reaction kinetics, and research into the energy relaxation and transfer processes in molecular systems.

N.G. Bassov [sic] and A.M. Prokhorov (Nikolay Gennadiyevich Basov and Alexander Prokhorov) "The Theory of a Molecular Oscillator and a Molecular Power Amplifier" in "Discussions of the Faraday Society," no. 19 ("Microwave and Radio-Frequency Spectroscopy", Aberdeen, 1955; 9.5x6", 281pp, with the article on pp 96-99. Original wrappers. VG copy. Pioneering quantum physics work laid the groundwork for what we now know as masers and lasers?it was a foundational theoretical framework for the maser leading directly to the invention of the laser. "The Nobel Prize in Physics 1964 was awarded to N.G. Basov, Charles H. Townes and Aleksandr M. Prokhorov "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle".--Nobel Prize Foundation. "Stimulated emission means that a light packet, a photon, coming in contact with an atom can cause an electron to descend to a lower energy level so that an additional photon with the same amount of energy is emitted. If electrons are elevated to higher energy levels with the help of heat or light, an avalanche-like effect occurs when they fall to lower levels. In the 1950s Nicolay Basov, Aleksandr Prokhorov and Charles Townes contributed to putting this phenomenon into practical use in masers and lasers, which produce concentrated and coherent beams of microwaves and light, respectively."--ibid. "The details of an oscillator were worked out by the Soviets in the post-war years with an initial presentation by Basov and Prokhorov on the theoretical details in 1952 followed by their first publication two years later describing the same work. At the time the two referred to their device as molecular amplifier and generator, or MAG, with the name "maser" being coined later in the United States." --Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting, article on Nikolai G. Basov by Benjamin Johnson. "Basov and Prokhorov presented their theoretical work (independently of Charles Townes in the U.S.) on how to amplify microwaves and light using the quantum properties of molecules. Their framework established the main tenets of quantum electronics." --ibid 714.3.

Basov and his collaborators collected in this volume a vast amount of systemized experimental data and of theoretical results on chemical lasers thus placing it inbetween a textbook and a hand- book. The introduction is followed by a presentation of the fundamentals of chemical lasers. Subsequent chapters deal with specific types of chemical lasers including the most recent developments opening the road towards ecologically clean lasers.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 388 pp. Englisch.
