Les professeurs du Muséum, subjugués par la diversité et la vigueur des plantes ramenées, ne tarissaient pas d'éloges. Jussieu lui-même déclarait : " Le citoyen Baudin doit être proclamé l'un des voyageurs qui a le plus mérité de l'histoire naturelle ". L'engouement des savants et du public était tel que l'on construisit en urgence une nouvelle serre chaude, la serre Baudin, pour accueillir au Jardin des Plantes la collection des Antilles. Pendant tout le voyage (de septembre 1796 à juillet 1798), Baudin tint un journal au quotidien. Au retour, il le confia à Jussieu, qui le déposa au Muséum de Paris. Depuis, le " Journal de La Belle Angélique ", préservé dans les archives du Muséum, s'enfonça peu à peu dans l'oubli. Entièrement inédit, il est rédigé de façon très vivante ; il est magnifiquement illustré d'aquarelles (surtout des végétaux) et de dessins à l'encre (principalement des profils de côtes).
