Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj) I.G. Haupt (illustrator). First Edition. [beautiful copy, tight and clean, no discernible wear at all to the book; the jacket has just a bit of wear at the base of the spine and a couple of small tears + associated creasing at the upper left corner of the rear panel]. "A dramatic love story laid against the drab background of a travelling man's hotel in a small midwestern town." The plot concerns a cabaret singer who, after being jilted (in favor of the boss's daughter) by her traveling salesman boyfriend, turns to the Salvation Army for solace; then she meets up with the boyfriend again, and complications ensue. Adapted for the 1931 MGM film LAUGHING SINNERS, with Joan Crawford, Neil Hamilton and a young Clark Gable; it was one of a full dozen movies that Gable appeared in that year (three of which starred Crawford). The part of the singer was played in the original Broadway production by Mayo Methot (who later gained some notoriety as the famously contentious Mrs. Humphrey Bogart #3), and was described by The New York Times as "an unpretentious play with a fine, lingering aroma." (The dust jacket illustration for this book had also been used for the front cover illustration of the Dec. 14, 1929 issue of The New Yorker -- a fact which I discovered entirely by accident, and which now has me wondering if this sort of thing happened often.).
