Each ward has an illustrated layout of its streets, with the placement of individual buildings. Chapters on Savannah's architectural history detail the development and built environment of the downtown National Historic Landmark district. This book explores the city's origins, the evolution of its architecture through different periods, and the significance of its unique squares and street pattern. The introduction was written by Carl Feiss, F.A.I.A., A.I.P. Of special note is Chapter 3, which lists and illustrates the 56 buildings and structures documented by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), including the 13 demolished prior to publication.
