Independent curator and art historian Debra Bricker Balken investigates the period between 1933 and the artist's death in 1953, charting Marin's stylistic evolution as he moved beyond early translucent watercolors into vigorous, highly gestural oil paintings. The narrative analyzes how Marin's coastal scenes of Cape Split, Maine, alongside rhythmic Manhattan urban landscapes, synthesized calligraphic brushwork with fragmented spatial planes. Graphic designer Daphne Geismar orchestrated a clean, spacious layout that pairs full-page color plates of Marin's oils and watercolors with archival gelatin silver photographs. Arnold Newman's 1947 portrait of Marin in a wicker armchair serves as the frontispiece, complemented by documentary photography by Paul Strand, George Daniell, and Irving Penn. Printed in Singapore by CS Graphics, the production preserves the chromatic shifts, impasto textures, and fluid linear energy characteristic of Marin's late painting technique. Balken situates Marin's mid-century output at the crossroads of American modernism and the emerging New York School. Marin was one of the central figures of Alfred Stieglitz's 291 and An American Place galleries, establishing an American modernist vocabulary that bridged early twentieth-century experimentation with post-war abstraction. Critical analysis within the text traces how Marin's calligraphic marks, raw canvas treatments, and non-representational sea movements anticipated the Abstract Expressionist generation. Originating at the Portland Museum of Art in June 2011 before traveling to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, the volume documents key works drawn from major public and private collections. Essays trace the institutional reception of Marin's late oils, addressing mid-century critical debate over his transition from watercolorist to oil painter. Exhibition checklists, provenance records, and bibliographic citations round out a reference for curators, art historians, and collectors of twentieth-century American modernism. John Marin; Arnold Newman; Paul Strand; George Daniell; Irving Penn (illustrator).
