No Jacket. 1st Edition. 377 pp. The story is set in San Francisco in the early 1900s and follows the lives of two families, the wealthy and influential Sutro family and the working-class O'Connors. The novel explores the societal and economic differences between the two families and the impact it has on their relationships. The Sutro family is led by patriarch Adolph Sutro, a wealthy businessman and former mayor of San Francisco. His daughter, Lorraine, is a beautiful and headstrong young woman who is torn between her love for her father and her desire for independence. The O'Connors, on the other hand, are struggling to make ends meet.
