At the heart of the book is the notion of ?cultural deprivation,? a term that once circulated with an air of authority, implying that certain groups simply lacked the cultural tools required for success. Keddie approaches this with a level of calm scepticism that proves rather effective. Instead of accepting the premise, she examines the assumptions behind it, gently dismantling the idea that the issue lies with the people being described rather than the systems doing the describing. What follows is a series of arguments that are both clear and quietly subversive. Education, language, and social class are all brought into focus, not as isolated topics but as interconnected parts of a larger structure that tends to favour some while misunderstanding others. Keddie?s writing is direct without being aggressive, analytical without becoming impenetrable, and throughout there is the distinct impression that she is less interested in winning an argument than in reframing it entirely.
