'His best-known work, originally delivered as a series of lectures in 1645 1646, an attempted mediation between reason and faith, via natural law, in the context of the opposing religious stances of the English Civil War.'.

On a blank leaf preceding the treatise on spiritual opticks, there is a contemporary manuscript note added, rather uncomplimentary to the pope, reading, in part: "The pope is the enemy of ye church, A spiritual Nero, a vice beelzebub, a tyrant of souls, a prince of darknesse.".
