First edition of this diary transcribed by Forester "of a 19th-Century British seaman, impressed into His Majesty's Service to fight Bonaparte," and held by the French as prisoner for over 10 years at Givet after the HMS Hussar was shipwrecked.

Blue pictorial publisher's cloth, cover art of Napoleonic-era redcoat on front cover by Paget, gilt & white lettering (minor closed tear to spine, some bumping to head & foot, minor dustsoiling), still G copy. First edition of this Henty adventure set against the backdrop of the 1809 Peninsular War in which Sir John Moore was killed in Northern Portugal against Napoleon's armies. Hero is an Irishman, Terence O'Connor, a colonel in the Portuguese army who battles on the sea and land, witnesses the capture of Oporto, Wellesley's expulsion of Soult's army and the advances into Spain. Paget (1860-1908) is best remembered as the creator of the popular image of Sherlock Holmes in the Strand, but those in the present work are wonderfully rendered.

On one side of 8 x 19 cm piece of paper, torn from the end of a document. In fair condition, lightly aged, with strip of paper from mount adhering to the reverse. Two folds. The signature 'Cavan' is between two horizontal lines. The rest of the document would appear to be in a secretarial hand, but the matter is not quite certain. It reads: '[.] | I have the Honor | to be | Sir | Your Royal Highness's | Most Obedt. Faithful | & Much Obliged | Humble Servt. | Cavan'. It is dated 'Cowes. | March 1st 1804' and addressed to 'His Royal Highness | The Duke of York'. Annotated n a contemporary hand at foot: 'General The Earl of Cavan'.
