Otherwise the book is in excellent condition. The unclipped dust jacket has light wear and light soiling. "Southwell's poems in English were written during his work with the English Mission, from his return to England in July 1586 to his arrest in June 1592. Some are songs in traditional lyric forms adapted to religious themes, and others poems of meditative vision, such as his one long poem, 'Saint Peter's Complaint'. They were very popular with his con-temporaries, both Catholic and Anglican; from 1595, the year of his execution, to 1636, there were eighteen editions. The fifty-two short lyrics are printed here for the first time in the order in which they were arranged for spiritual instruction, and in which they were transcribed by Catholic copyists. This text is based on substantive editions, collated with the surviving MSS., or, for poems not included in early editions, on the Stonyhurst College MS.".
