Edward Lear (18121888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose. As an author, he is best known for his Book of Nonsense and the Owl and the Pussycat. As an artist he was hung in the Royal Academy and his coloured drawings of his journeys were later reworked as plates for his travel books. Despite poor health from a young age Lear travelled to Italy, Greece and Albania, and toured India from 1873-1875. Although he finished his paintings he was unable to complete the editing of his journals before he died. This is the first published edition of his Indian Journal.
