Paperback. 21 × 15cm, xviii + 408pp. The "Lotus Sutra", as it is generally known in the West, is one of the most important of all the Mahayana sutras, and especially in Japan, where it is popularly known as the Ho-ke-kyou. It is divided into 28 chapters, of which Chapter 16, 'The Duration of the Life of Tathagata', is especially important for its eulogy of sakyamuni as the embodiment of the eternal life and as having attained enlightenment in the inconceivably remote past. Condition: This copy is in good plus condition. There is a light crease to the spine, and a few lines of verse have been underlined in pen but the whole remaining in strong readable condition.

It was translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva in 406 under the title: Myohorengekyo (Miao-Fa-Lien-Hua-Ching). The Chinese title means "Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma. " The translation in this volume is based upon Kumarajivas Chinese work. The translator, Bishop Senchu Murano, was an ordained priest in Nichiren Shu. Murano earned a degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Washington in 1938 and served as a teacher of Buddhist studies at Rissho University in Tokyo from 1962 to 1979. Muranos ambitious work on this landmark translation took 20 years to complete. It was originally published in 1974 and was the first full translation of Kumarajivas Chinese work to appear in English. Long out of print, Muranos groundbreaking work been faithfully reproduced and enhanced for the digital era. For the first time, it is now widely available to a new generation of Buddhist students and scholars. This thirteenth-century text by Nichiren extols the Lotus Sutra and critiques the other schools of Japanese Buddhism active at that time. Nichiren was arrested by the Kamakura government in 1271 and sentenced to exile on Sado Island. There he was in constant danger of assassination, and wrote the Kaimokusho to convince his remaining followers to follow his example in Buddhism. To do this, Nichiren criticized religions other than Buddhism, and then Buddhist sutras other than the Lotus Sutra. He asked the question Am I not the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra and answered this question by quoting five testimonies to the truthfulness of his faith. He also identifies the three kinds of arrogant people and equates them with the three kinds of enemies of the Lotus Sutra. near fine condition.
