Published by Richard A. Saalfield, New York, 1884
Seller: Quaint Book Shop, Springfield, OH, U.S.A.
Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Fair. Edition Unstated. This is a collection of sheet music with vocal and piano scoring published by Saalfield and combined into a single volume. As a result, there is both individual pagination for each song and continuous for the whole collection. Despite its title, only a few of the songs evoke a stereotyped black dialect the name "Minstrel" evokes. One is in what purports to be a Chinese accent; a couple are love songs presented as Irish ballads. "Uncle Sam's Farm" invites immigrants to come and settle on the plentiful land. Most are sentimental songs of lost or distant loves and home -- and even the social conditions of the era. The lyrics of "Somebody's Grandpa" were inspired by a newspaper account of a young girl moved with compassion by the plight of a aged homeless man "[i]n drunken sleep" on a city street. This copy is missing the title page but the pagination fits the description of the title listed in WorldCat (OCLC ID 79338868), with two holdings: James P. Adam Library, Rhode Island College [c. 1883; New edition; v. 2], and Brown University Library [2 copies, c1883 & c1885. An alternate subtitle provided in an advertisement is perhaps more accurate in its description: A book of late popular and talking Songs and Choruses. Negro, Sentimental, Comic, Motto and others. Size: Quarto (11-13"). 196 pages. Item Type: Book. The pages of the text block are of cheap paper (similar to, but heavier than, newsprint) that has tanned from age. A few (around 10) have separated from the threads, resulting in loss around the edges. The paper is fragile and a few pages have tears, mainly from the outside edge. (I am being general here because I am trying not to handle it too much). Hardcover in Fair condition in original cloth with embossed frame on the front and rear covers and the title "Minstrel Folio" in gilt decoration on the front cover. The corners are turned with wear to the boards at the tips. The spine is slightly faded with some wear to the rear hinge. Quantity Available: 1.
