Ende des 18. Die Shaikhs konnten zwar ihre inneren Angelegenheiten selbst regeln, aber nur, solange sich daraus kein Konflikt mit der britischen Hegemonie ergab und die für die Regierung der Kolonien und den Handel nötige umfassende Kontrolle aller regionalen Angelegenheiten nicht gefährdet war. Mit einer Kombination aus sanfter Diplomatie und erbarmungslosem Zwang hielten die Briten ihre absolute Vormachtstellung in der Region aufrecht. Das Buch berichtet von einigen bedeutenden Ereignissen, die den Entwicklungsverlauf der Region entscheidend beeinflusst haben, und endet damit, dass Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr bin Khalid al-Qasimi, der damalige Herrscher von Sharjah, an Bord des britischen Kriegsschiffes HMS Bideford am 23. Juli 1932 das Sharjah Air Station Agreement unterzeichnet, ein Abkommen, das britischen Zivilflugzeugen erlaubte, in Sharjah zu landen. Diese Öffnung des Arabischen Golfs für die Luftfahrt machte der ganzen Region den Weg ins 20. Jahrhundert frei.
