paperback. Condition: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton…mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good Indeed. A very scarce and charming collection of great poems from the Enlightenment era, bound in a lovely later quarter calf binding from Bath. A Collection of Modern Poems, a charming selection from Britain's best poets of the era, including Edward Young, Thomas Gray, and Robert Blair. Very scarce… in commerce. Printed by J. James. In a later signed quarter calf binding, with marble boards, renewed end papers and blanks and the original half-title. Bound by Lewis & Harris bookbinders based in Bath. Containing classic poems both from recent years, including Thomas Gray's Elegy, as well as poems from the beginning of the century, including Young's Last Day, these poems offer great insight into the profound literature of the Enlightenment era. The Anthology is characterised by a small quote from Alexander Pope to the verso of the half-title complimenting art of the age. - Love of Fame, the Universal Passion in Several Characteristical Satyrs by Edward Young (1762, first published between 1725-1728). - A Poem on the Last Day in Three Books by Edward Young (1762, first published in 1713). - An Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard, with a Hymn to Adversity by Mr. Thomas Gray (1762, first published in 1751). - The Grave by Robert Blair (1761, first published in 1743). - The Hermit, together with a Night Piece on Death, by Thomas Parnell (1762, first posthumously published in 1722). Contact seller2-star sellerFirst Scottish edition, which includes, among others, poems from Gray's most famous work, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (1751). For this edition, the Foulis brothers had Alexander Wilson cut a special font of double pica roman type. Updike, Printing Types, II: 143. Foulis publications "are now much sought after as admira…ble specimens of typography, and are noticeable for their severely plain elegance. . . The works produced by it are quite entitled to rank with the Aldines, Elzevirs, Bodonis, Baskervilles, which are all justly renowned for the varied excellencies they possess, but no provincial, and certainly no metropolitan, press in [Scotland] has ever surpassed that of the two brothers" The Library, March 1889, p. 95. 4to. [4], 63pp., [1]. Gaskell 475 (common paper variant without "*" which Gaskell notes is "a much rarer book than the fine [variant]"). Northup 56. ESTC T127821. Very good minus in handsome modern full blindstamped calf with new endpapers by Dragonfly Bindery, toning and brittle front free endpaper with prior owner name, contents generally clean with tear to leaf, professional repair to title page not affecting text, scattered light foxing, still a pleasing copy.
