Estelle Doheny (1875-1958) married Edward Doheny (1856-1935) the wealthy oil man and philanthropist. Her great collection was for many years housed at the Vincentian Seminary of St. John's in California. She donated part of her collection to Vincentian Seminary of St. Mary's of the Barrens Missouri, who years later sold some at a Christie's Auction. Estelle was one of the first American female book collectors and was buying books and manuscripts until her death in 1958. She was the only female collector of the time who's library was notable for both its scope and quality. See DePaul University website for their ex Estelle books & their scan of her bookplate, same design but mine is green/gilt. 13 x 19.5cm Approx.
