First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. 211 Photographs / Plates (illustrator). First Edition. Cloth covers, gilt titling, soiled covers badly discoloured areas. Previous owner's book plate and name on front end papers. 189 pages clean and tight. Scarce title. PREFACE THE origin of this book is due to the war. Photographs were taken of the old streets and objects of interest in the City, in an endeavour to form as complete a record as possible in the event of destruction by enemy action. Unfortunately, it was not possible to get a photograph of the Guildhall roof, which was undergoing repairs, but we have pictures of the Guildhall door, also of the font cover and a benefaction board in St. Martin's, Coney Street, all of which were damaged or destroyed. In recent years, a large number of books have been published about domestic and church furniture, as well as others on early domestic architecture in the country, but this book is an attempt to describe the existing work in one town. The illustrations show how rich the City of York is in examples of the craft of the joiner, the carpenter, the carver and turner, ranging in time and interest from the Middle Ages to the present day, most being the work of York craftsmen. Fortunately, our ancestors in the early days used oak to a large extent, which stands up to hard usage and resists the ravages of the woodworm better than the softer woods. Italics are used to denote that the place in that type is the subject of an illustration, and to facilitate reference to the particular feature illustrated, a detailed index is included. J.B. M. YORK, 1949. Size: 4to.
