With the expansion of the Park boundaries to incl…ude much of Meirionydd/Merioneth, this volume was produced to replace the earlier New Naturalist, Snowdonia, in which the emphasis was on Caernarvonshire. This is New Naturalist number 47. Bill Condry produced this book to describe the new, expanded Snowdonia National Park, when the boundaries of the Park were widened to include much of Meirionydd. This volume was produced to replace the earlier New Naturalist, Snowdonia (NN13, North, Campbell and Scott, 1949), in which the emphasis was obviously on Caernarvonshire. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. Good-plus - but lacking dust-wrapper. "This is the story of an exceptional woman. Mary Richards was born in 1885 near Dolge…llau, North Wales. Hugely energetic, she was devoted to travel, the outdoor life and natural history. After the Second World War, widowed and her children grown up, she was just settling down to a quiet old age when friends who had bought an estate in south-central Africa invited her to visit them. At the age of 66 she took to the African wilderness with enormous enthusiasm and began collecting plants for the herbarium at Kew. That African holiday was to be the first of many and eventually she decided to live out there, staying for twenty-two years during which she faced appalling hardships of weather and bad roads as she explored forests, plains, swamps, deserts and mountains; and she went on roughing it out in the bush until she was 88 years old. This biography, based on her diaries, portrays the life, in Wales and in Africa, of a brave and adventurous woman who loved life and was ever excited by the whole world of nature." .

"This magnificent land of snow-capped mountains, soaring eagles…, deep wooded valleys and raging waterfalls has long captivated the hearts and minds of its inhabitants and visitors - and it became one of Britain's first National Parks. .William Condry takes us on his personal guided tour to show the wide variety of delights in store for the informed explorer. He describes the entrancing, often rare, flowers and ferns of the true alpine zone; the wealth of animal life in the many nature reserves; and the human story of succeeding generations who have left their marks on the land and shaped its attractive little towns and villages. He writes evocatively of Snowdonia's past, from megaliths and castles to the brooding remains of once-great slate and mining industries - and the now-thriving narrow-gauge railways. .Whether you are exploring by road, rail, or along the many challenging footpaths amidst crags and rolling ridges, this book will enrich your awareness of a place of rare splendour." .
