The author, originally from Lucknow, India, studied at American University in Washington D.C. where he also worked for The Evening Star. He also earned a degree from The Columbia University School of Journalism, after which he worked for several Scripps-Howard newspapers. The author,according to the Dust Jacket, "smuggled himself' into Cuba five years after the Revolution to learn what it was like to live in Cuba after half a decade of Castro's rule. This book is an based upon the author's newspaper articles, and is an expanded version. He encounters Russians, sugar workers, militamen, becados, and 'a couple of bikini-clad enemies of the state.'.
