Seller: Booklover's Treasures, Foxboro, MA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. In this book, containing one hundred and seven illustrations, the author presents a closely studied history of three bronze statues of Abraham Lincoln that, with astonishing results, broke the established iconic portrayal of the American hero. Consisting of a prototype and two replicas that were sculpted by George Grey Barnard, the images portray their subject not as a sagacious demigod but as a country lout. The tight focus of Moffatt's topic has thus facilitated a surprisingly broad examination of the social, political, and cultural environments of two countries in two distinct periods of the twentieth century. Notes. Bibliography. Profusely illustrated. New hardcover in a new, mylar covered, dust jacket. The photos on the listing page are of the actual book for sale, NOT stock photos. Always carefully packaged and shipped quickly.

The major work on American artist Arthur Wesley Dow, issued in conjunction with 1977-1978 exhibitions of his work. Dow was an American painter, printmaker, photographer and an arts educator. His ideas were quite revolutionary for the period; Dow taught that rather than copying nature, individuals should create art through elements of the composition, such as line, mass, and color. [20] He wanted leaders of the public to see art is a living force for all in everyday life, not as a sort of traditional ornament for the few. His ideas on art were published in his 1899 book 'Composition: A Series of Exercises in Art Structure for the Use of Students and Teachers'. Dow taught many of America's leading artists and craftspeople, including: Georgia O'Keeffe, Shirley Williamson, Charles Sheeler, Charles J. Martin, two of the Overbeck Sisters, Delle Miller, Charles Burchfield, Isabelle Percy West and Walter King Stone. One of his pupils, the educator and printmaker Pedro Joseph de Lemos, adapted and widely disseminated Dow's theories in dozens of theoretical and instructional publications (19181950) for art schools. Chapters in this volume include Beginnings; Paris and Brittany; The Return; Japanese Currents; The Pratt Institute and The Launching of Composition; Ipswich and The World; Teachers College; Dow and Modernism; Conclusion. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 159 pages. pages.
