Sempé se dirigea alors vers d'autres supports, notamment en dessinant les couvertures du New Yorker ; surtout, il publia régulièrement de somptueux albums et commença à exposer ses dessins originaux dans des galeries, n'hésitant pas à en créer expressément pour les cimaises. Il conquit ainsi un public nouveau, plus exigeant, un public familier de l'art moderne et contemporain. Fini la production harassante de e gags" : place à l'évocation, à l'humeur, au trait d'esprit, à la poésie. Avec Saul Steinberg et quelques autres, il a hissé le dessin d'humour au rang de grand art. Aujourd'hui, ses admirateurs éprouveront peut-être l'envie et la curiosité de savoir davantage de quelle manière Sempé dessine, et comment surgissent ses idées ? Ses carnets, longtemps tenus à l'abri des curieux, constituent un précieux témoignage de sa recherche, de son inspiration. On y retrouve toute la grâce de son trait, sa spontanéité, et le petit miracle d'une expression ou d'un mouvement. Il en adviendra peut-être un dessin plus abouti, fourmillant souvent de mille détails, en un tumulte organisé où l'homme infiniment petit se heurte à l'énormité de son environnement avenues, places publiques, grands ensembles, et puis les arbres, les champs, la mer, toujours démesurés. La plupart de ces dessins s'accompagnent d'une légende digne des grands moralistes, voire des dramaturges : il y a un véritable théâtre qui se joue sur la feuille de papier. Dans ses carnets, le dessinateur ne poursuit pas d'autre but que de noter une expression, une attitude, un geste, un décor. Nous sommes en présence de ce que le dessin a de plus fragile, de plus suggestif aussi. Rien ne semble dit, mais tout est dit, qui nous laisse dans un état de rêverie absolu.".
