L'ouvrage, source de première importance pour la connaissance du judaïsme européen, a été traduit de l'italien du rabbin vénitien Léon de Modène par le célèbre bibliste et hébraïsant Richard Simon (ou Simonville) (Dieppe, 1638-1712). L'oeuvre est en effet principalement celle de Richard Simon lui-même, et contient le supplément sur les sectes juives hérétiques, les Caraïtes et les Samaritains, ainsi que plusieurs autres chapitres sur les divinations et sortilèges.
