The Eureka mining district, alternately known as "Silverado," the "Secret Valley," or the "Secret Canyon" area, was discovered in 1864 and harbored an…abundance of silver, lead, gold, and other valuable minerals. This work serves as a directory of local mining operations at the time, with descriptions of specific mines, U.S. mining laws, and statistics regarding the county's mineral production. The wood-engraved plates depict various types of mining furnaces and mining sites in the county, and include a bird's-eye-view of Eureka. Contains several pages of local advertising for saloons, tailors, hotels, attorneys, and real estate agents. Scarce in the market: the last time this Nevada mining rarity was recorded at auction was in 1960. PAHER 1308. LINGENFELTER NV:1163. Original grey cloth, gilt board title. Some light rubbing, slightly heavier to corners. Light foxing to the plates, otherwise clean internally. A very good copy.
