A note on the front pastedown gives the writer as " Mlle. Langland de Lille"(?) Ink collector's/seller's stamp to verso ffep. Holland House bookplate also to pastedown, with usual crayon markings to bookplate. (An early Jacobean country house in Kensington, known as the Whig social epicentre of the early 19th century). During his visit to Paris in 1765, David Garrick was presented with a collection of miniature portraits by Faesch of actors at the Comedie-Francaise. The artist pursued the connection, arriving in London in May 1768 with an introduction to England's greatest actor and within two years saw the first series of his theatrical portrait engravings published by Sayer. He went on to portray many actors and actresses of the Comedie-Francaise and Comedie-Italienne in Paris and Drury Lane Theatre in London. Mlle. Langlard, a member of the prominent Lenglart textile and merchantile dynasty, compiled and wrote detailed biographical, critical and dramatic notes for each of the plates. Sometime during the 19th century the volume was acquired by Holland House, most probably as a study volume for its unique commentary on French dramatic history, Lord and Lady Holland running the most famous Francophile and literary salon at that time. Thereafter, when the library was dispersed, the volume went through the hands of an unidentified dealer. Scarce with OCLC locating four coloured copies and four uncoloured copies in libraries and institutions worldwide. Brunet III, 1676 - Pas dans Béraldi. - Cohen p. 1066. - Colas 3073. The letters relate to work done for the firm of her brother-in-law Marcus Adams (described in his Times obituary as 'the outstanding child photographer of his day and photographer to the Royal Family f…or more than 30 years'), at 43 Dover Street, Mayfair. She begins the first letter by explaining that she has 'endeavoured to make the Woodall miniature like the snapshot, but unless they are really satisfied I had better do another. It is very difficult when something different from the photo is wanted, but I don't mind how long it takes if only I can get what they want, as they have lost the boy | If I have to do another, please return this with another piece of ivory (I have no more) so that I shall be sure of getting colour of hair right.' She continues with more business talk, before concluding with a discussion of politics, attacking the Labour government as an 'extravagant, incompetent horde'. In the second letter she discusses 'the Hillmans group' and her willingness to do 'a specimen of Tuckwell' ('such a bright, very much alive & happy child'). The letter concludes with a discussion of colour in her work, and the importance of pleasing the mother of the subject.

The unusually large miniature is particularly appropriate for what remains one of the standard bibliographies of Johnson, transforming an important work of scholarship into a fitting tribute to England's greatest man of letters. Cosway Bindings: In the first decade of the twentieth century, the London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran & Co., introduced a type of binding that was decorative, had historic associations, and catered to the level of quality expected by connoisseurs at the time. Between 1902 and 1903, John Harrison Stonehouse (1864-1937), managing director of Sotheran's, created what came to be referred to as "Cosway bindings." These were named after the celebrated eighteenth-century English portrait miniaturist Richard Cosway (1742-1821). Cosway bindings are distinguished by their attractive, finely painted miniatures that are protected by glass and inset into the covers or doublures (inside covers) of elegantly tooled books. Stonehouse's success with the bindings was due in part to his employment of skilled miniaturist, Miss C. B. Currie. It has been estimated that Miss Currie painted several thousand miniatures, recognized for their delicate rendering and precision, for over nine hundred bindings before her death circa 1940. For many of the more lavish Cosway bindings, Currie painted multiple portraits. Occasionally, landscapes and other subjects adorn the covers or doublures. To enhance Currie's miniatures, Stonehouse arranged for the London firm of Rivière & Son to produce a variety of high-quality single-volume bindings. One of the best large-scale binderies active in the first quarter of the twentieth century, Rivière & Son integrated the miniatures into bindings for both previously published editions and new works. Stonehouse marketed Sotheran's finished Cosway-bound volumes primarily to booksellers in the United States or to American agents. In 1990, inspired by the work of Michael Pierce and the late Marcelle Shears, she began to paint silhouettes. June completed silhouette com missions for Harrods, the Bath Museum of Costume, and several TV companies and was commissioned through the Hilliard Society to paint profiles of T.E. Laurence and Thomas and Florence Hardy for a special commemorative exhibition in Dorchester Museum.
